What’s in a Breakfast Bowl?

Traditionally a breakfast bowl takes a lot of your favorite breakfast foods that you would typically get on a large plate and mixes them together in a bowl that’s easy to eat on the go.

A Country Breakfast Bowl has ingredients like scrambled eggs, sausage/bacon, potatoes, cheese, onions, and is usually topped with cheese.

In recent years, people have started converting healthier foods into breakfast bowl style recipes that are also easy to make ahead of time and eat on the go.

In this post, I’ve rounded up 25 recipes that cover traditional breakfast bowls as well as some more unique recipes that have been adapted for easy meal prepping.

I picked meal prep breakfast bowl recipes that meet these criteria:

  • Can be easily made ahead of time
  • Are healthy
  • Taste great
  • Easily fit into a bowl or meal prep container so you can take it on the go if you need to

Are Breakfast Bowls Good for You?

The ones in this post are! The Mayo Clinic recommends eating a breakfast that includes:

  • Complex carbohydrates
  • Fiber
  • Protein
  • A small amount of fat

With the lean proteins, fruit, vegetables, and healthy carbs included in the recipes, this list of breakfast bowls has you covered.

Are Jimmy Dean breakfast bowls healthy?

I wouldn’t go so far as to say Jimmy Dean breakfast bowls are unhealthy, but they wouldn’t be my first choice. Especially when a healthier version can easily be cooked at home and popped in the freezer to be just as convenient.

Here are some of the reasons I personally don’t find them to be super healthy:

High sodium levels: At 1150mg per serving, that’s half the recommended amount of sodium a day. Considering that’s just breakfast, that’s a lot of sodium.

High cholesterol levels: One serving contains 295mg of cholesterol. That’s 98% of the recommended daily amount. Enough said!

High saturated fat levels: One serving contains 50% of the daily recommended amount of saturated fat. According to Medline Plus, too muchsaturated fatcan cause cholesterol to build up in your arteries (blood vessels).Saturated fatsraise your LDL (bad) cholesterol. High LDL cholesterol increases your risk for heart disease and stroke.

A Jimmy Dean breakfast bowl is a healthier alternative to say a donut or muffin, but it still has a ways to go to be as healthy as one of the meal prep breakfast bowls on this list.

How Long Do Meal Prep Breakfast Bowls Last?

Meal prep breakfast bowls last about 3-5 days in the fridge depending on the ingredients and 2-3 months in the freezer.

If you want to prep your food to last the whole week, you have a couple of options.

  1. Cook your meal prep on Sundays and Wednesdays and just keep it in the fridge.
  2. Cook your meal prep on Sundays and keep it in the freezer. You can pull it out of the freezer a day or two early to let it defrost.
  3. Cook on Sunday, but only cook enough for a few days and pick some other easy breakfast ideas for the rest of the week.

How to Meal Prep Scrambled Eggs

Meal prepping scrambled eggs is pretty straightforward. Cook them like you normally would, but instead of cooking them all the way, stop at about 90%.

Leave them just a little watery, so that when you reheat them, they don’t get dry and overcooked.

Meal prepped eggs taste best if you eat them within 2-3 days of cooking. They’re still safe to eat within the 3-5 day time frame, but the flavor and quality tend to decline.

Scrambled eggs are perfectly safe to freeze, so for recipes that call for scrambled eggs, you would probably be better off freezing your meal prep to help it last longer.

How to Freeze Meal Prep Breakfast Bowls

For many of the recipes listed above, freezing your meal prep breakfast bowls is the best way to keep them fresh and safe to eat for the whole week (or longer!).

I have found the easiest way to freeze them is to use freezer safe meal prep bowls like these.

25 Yummy & Healthy Meal Prep Breakfast Bowls – Little Steps, Big Happy (10)Simply cook a big batch of your breakfast bowl, portion it out evenly into your meal prep containers, and throw it into the freezer.

For the best results here are a few tips to follow:

  • Let the food cool before putting it in the freezer.
  • Put a label with the type of food and date on it.
  • Don’t refreeze food unless you’re going to cook it in between.
  • Make sure your containers are fully sealed.

How to Reheat Meal Prep Breakfast Bowls

Reheating meal prep breakfast bowls is as simple as taking them out of the fridge and popping them into the microwave for a few minutes.

If your breakfast bowls were in the freezer, then you will need to make sure they fully defrost before you heat them up. You can defrost them in the fridge overnight, or use a microwave.

If you aren’t a fan of reheating in the microwave, then you could use a skillet or the oven. A few minutes at a low setting is usually enough to reheat the food.

The only downside to that method is that you run a higher chance of overcooking the food or drying it out.

Conclusion

So there’s your list of 25 healthy meal prep breakfast bowls. You can use this to make starting your day off with a healthy meal easy and fast.
