He was born August 4, 1944 in Wilmington, NC. Kurt grew up on Emer- ald Isle, NC.

After having to medically retire from the Army as a Captain in 1976, he returned to Emerald Isle to raise his family. He had served 2 tours in Vietnam receiving a Purple Heart and many other awards. He was a helicopter pilot and a wing pilot. He graduated from 2 univer- sities University of Nebras- ka at Omaha (History) and Southern Illinois Universi- ty with a degree in Airport Management. In 1985 he owned and operated Thompson and Thompson a 400 mobile home park in Indian Beach, NC until he retired from that in 2005.

Kurt was an avid man, scuba diver, snow ski- er and loved his many boats (sail and motorized). He loved owning a 1970 Cessna 177 Cardinal. He loved Louis west- erns. His wife often said, was a man to ride the river His children referred to him as, Gadget He put his amazing tool col- lection to use in his work- shop inventing, and repairing things. Kurt could anything.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Sue Wilkinson Thompson, 2 sons G. Kurt Jr. and Jeff (wife Gwyn), sister Sue T. Schwartz. 5 grandchildren Mattie, Sloan, Graham, Sasha and Sawyer.

And many nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents Doris and Earl and brother Wayne E. Thompson. He was loved and will be missed by us all. You are invited to join the family for an outdoor ocean side celebration at 2701 Em- erald Dr.

A former researcher at Duke University, and 24-year vet- eran teacher with Durham City Schools, she is survived by two sons George B. Gilmore (Betty) of Washing- ton DC, and Stephen Gilm- ore of Durham, NC. She is also survived by brothers David Lee Bobbitt of South Hill, VA, and James Bernard Bobbitt of Oxford, NC; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Evelyn Gilmore September 6, 1927 October 30, 2023 Raleigh, North Carolina Lena Mae Edwards Win- ton passed away following a brief illness on September 25, 2023, at the age of 94. Predeceased by her parents Alex and Lila Edwards of Louisburg, NC, husband Kenneth Winton, daughter Linda Pynn, grandson Pat- rick Petty, and son-in-law Stephen Squires, Lena is survived by daughters Judy Squires, Ginny Petty (Pete), and Laura Meadows (Will), along with seven grandchil- dren, their four spouses, and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Robert Edwards of Louisburg, NC, sister Shirley Frankos of Portsmouth, VA, cousin Pat Kennedy (Leland) of Wake Forest, NC, and brother-in-law Bill Winton (Charlotte) of Dallas, TX. Powell II, 81, departed this life on Friday, October 20, 2023, at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, Wilmington, N.C.

Dr. Powell was the born of Dr. J.B. and Jean Pow- ell. Raised in Clinton, N.C., Powell graduated from Clin- ton High School, Davidson College and U.N.C.

School of Medicine. Dr. Powell had an exemplary career in med- icine for which he was rec- ognized in 2023 with a Life- time Achievement Award by the U.N.C. School of Medi- cine and was also named a Healthcare Hero in Southeast N.C. He was a board-certi- Fellow of the College of Obstetricians and Gynecolo- gists, a Gyne- cologic Oncologist and was also by the Ameri- can Board of Laser Surgery.

He served 8 years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps deliv- ering over 5,000 babies and reaching the rank of Major. He completed a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology in Atlanta and was later re- cruited to be the Director of Gynecologic Oncology at Baystate Medical Center in Massachusetts. While there, he rose from Assistant to Full Professor at Tufts Medical Center, training thousands of med- ical students and residents. Dr.

Powell also served on the Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society. Powell was a pioneer of laser surgery, lecturing on the use of lasers in 26 U.S. states, Puerto Rico and 8 foreign countries. He also designed 2 surgical instruments which are now widely used by Gy- necologists. Powell authored over 200 articles which were published in peer-reviewed medical journals and 13 book chapters.

He also wrote 140 articles known as which focused on famous names in medical and surgical history, many of which were published in medical journals. Dr. Powell gave more than 300 presen- tations at regional, national and international medical meetings. In 1994, Dr. Pow- ell was recruited to join the A.H.E.C.

teaching program at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, not only as the sole Gynecologic Oncol- ogist but also to help design and start up the Zimmer Can- cer Center. After retirement, Dr. Powell served 7 years as Coordinator of the Retired Physicians Section of the local medical society. Dr. Powell dedicated his life to the practice of medicine, giving his patients the best care possible and inspiring other doctors to do likewise.
